Ultra-pure pharmaceutical and food products such as coffee have led to an impressive rise in the use of supercritical CO2. It allows producers to refine compounds without either leaving toxic residues or risking thermal damage. Modern powder creation also involves crystallisation with supercritical fluids.
The vapour permeability of the materials and products used is both vital to the process and traditionally tricky to determine. Now, Versaperm has developed an instrument to measure this both quickly and to a very high degree of accuracy.
The transport properties of supercritical CO2 offers deeper penetration into a product and is leading to faster, efficient extraction than available conventional organic solvents. Supercritical CO2 vapour can permeate through many solid barriers in a way that can be very sensitive to small temperature and pressure variations, it can also allow users to control these factors very precisely.
The Versaperm system is quick, accurate in the parts per million and simple to use. The equipment can measure several samples at a time. It is controlled via a simple automated control panel with a large touch-screen and requires, at most, minimal training.
Supercritical CO2 can be used for everything from the processing of coffee and vegetable oil through to Insulin and anti-asthma drugs. It can even be used to produce Biocrude, a next-generation non-fossil fuel.
As well as designing, manufacturing and supplying the equipment to laboratories, including standards laboratories around the world, Versaperm also offers laboratory testing service and consultancy services.
